Friday, November 20. 2009It's not a job, it's a challenge
With the worst of the economic downturn behind us, we're seeing an increasing demand for our services, so we are ready to expand again. We've had a steady growth since our inception in 1999, and have always been cautious not to grow too fast in too short a timeframe, which has helped us grow steadily over the years and remain stable even when the economy turned its back on us. This means that we often say 'no' to potential customers simply because we do not want to compromise on quality and stability by growing too fast. It also means that no matter how hard we're looking for new talent, we do not compromise on our recruitment practices and we have quite a thorough process.
In this post, I'd like to share a bit on what our recruitment process looks like, what we look for in people and what working at Ibuildings means for our staff. If you're interested to work for Ibuildings, read on. We currently have openings for medium and senior developers in our UK office, medium and senior developers and a project manager for our Dutch offices and finally several medium and senior developers in our Italian office. A complete overview with full job descriptions can be found on our website. Continue reading "It's not a job, it's a challenge" Tuesday, June 23. 2009Best Practices in Estimating
Part of the mandate for the PHP Center for Expertise inside of Ibuildings is an ongoing series of Business Process Re-Engineering projects. The first of these projects, "Estimating Best Practices", was recently completed and released. It contains the collected best practices from estimators inside Ibuildings, as well as input from external experts and published works.
Our estimating team spent two months thinking and discussing how software companies create estimates; we discussed what works and what doesn't. While the final document itself, along with the accompanying workbook, are available internally only, some of what was learned about the meta process of estimating may be interesting to others. Here are four Best Practices that came out of the process that we want to share with everyone. The conference features speakers such as Derick Rethans and Rob Allen (see the schedule for more speakers), and at 50 GBP it's very good value for money for PHP developers. Yesterday was an incredible day for Ibuildings. I have never experienced anything like it before. Never expected or anticipated so much talk, chat and blogging on one person's move from one company to another. I knew that Cal Evans was popular in the community, but didn't realise fully what a celebrity he is. Wow... what an incredible addition to our team..
I saw Cal present in a London PHP seminar 2 years ago. Even though it was very techie and well above my head, I could see how everyone in the audience was captivated and mesmerised by his incredible presentation skills, confidence and lovely interaction with the audience. At that conference, I realised for the first time what an incredible following one language could have. I have been involved with many languages in my life, but never witnessed such admiration and fanatical adulation of a programming language. The more I explored, the more fanatics I found, the wider the community and the more passionate the supporters. Continue reading "Welcome Cal!" Monday, June 23. 2008Post-conference thoughts
It is over a week since the Dutch PHP Conference, and I thought I would have plenty of time to gather my thoughts on the event, and put some wise words down. But since things are as busy as ever in the UK office, I guess this will have to do...
Conference organisation seemed top-rate to me - no one was looking lost or wondering what to do - all went very smoothly, and the sheer number of attendees was very impressive. Overall, people left with a great impression of Ibuildings, which is fantastic, and it seemed like our black polo shirts were everywhere, talking to each other and of course the community. Continue reading "Post-conference thoughts" Friday, May 23. 2008New partnership: php|architect This week I'm at the php|tek conference in Chicago, organized by php|architect. I'm happy to announce that as of now, we have a partnership agreement with php|architect! We will be adding the php|architect trainings to our existing training portfolio, which means that php|architects trainings can now also be delivered on-site in the countries where Ibuildings operates. php|architect is a strong brand when it comes to PHP knowledge, so I'm very proud they teamed up with us! The official announcement can be read here: Press release

Thursday, January 31. 2008Development projects @ Ibuildings
For several years Ibuildings is known as a partner in PHP development projects for our clients. Last year the type of customers and the type of projects have changed. Several 'New media' customers found their way to Ibuildings and asked for specific custom made front-end and back-end solutions within a fixed budget and time scale.

On february 29, the London PHP Community is organizing their annual PHP conference.
I have been a fan since the first conference because they offer an informative program at a very reasonable price (90 GBP if you register now). It's also very easy to attend for Dutch PHP developers, there's a 7.20 am flight from Rotterdam airport that takes you to stansted, where you can take an express train that takes you close to the venue. To show our support for the conference, and to celebrate the opening of our office in London this year, we decided to proudly sponsor this years conference, together with Zend. Shameless plug: we are constantly looking for talented senior PHP developers/consultants. If you're interested talk to us at our booth at the conference. Monday, December 31. 2007Ibuildings in 2007
On my personal blog I have written an article about how 2007 was a year where PHP strengthened its position in the business world.
Being a PHP service company, this naturally had an impact on Ibuildings. Our team of PHP professionals grew significantly, and we even expanded our horizon into other countries, starting with the UK. We welcomed many new customers. Some that were already using PHP, some that have only just embraced PHP as a development language. Continue reading "Ibuildings in 2007" Tuesday, December 11. 2007Symfony workshopOn a regular basis, Ibuildings employees give internal presentations or workshops to share knowledge or present something they are enthusiastic about. Yesterday evening I was able to give a presentation to quite a nice group of my colleagues about the symfony framework. The evening was split up in two parts. Continue reading "Symfony workshop"
