137 CMS Systems

At the moment, Wikipedia's list of content management systems features 137 unique CMS products. 59 of these are written in PHP.

And that's only the ones that Wikipedia finds 'notable', which means these are the ones that have significant usage or large enough communities to be mentioned. There's at least twice the amount that aren't notable, and if we count all the CMS systems that many web development agencies produce, then there's a whole lot more CMS systems out there.

Review: PHP5 CMS Framework Development

"PHP5 CMS Framework Development", a book written by Martin Brampton, explores how to approach the typical requirements of a PHP5-based Content Management System and underlying framework.

After contributing for a while to projects like Joomla! and Mambo, Martin took on the role of a lead developer of Mambo 4.6.1. The six months spent leading the project gave him a good understanding of its functionalities and limitations. Martin left Mambo (before they announced to drop support for PHP4 last September) to write his own CMS and "evolve out of the Mambo history", by taking advantage of PHP5 OO enhancements. The result is Aliro: a CMS, a framework and an extension project with traits and genes of the Mambo family. Aliro code is used throughout the book to support and illustrate his presentation.

Flexiblity regarding development requests

At Ibuildings we highly value the principle of 'using the right tool for the job'. Of course: our own business framework ATK and our CMS WDE get our special attention, but we don't want to close our eyes for other open source frameworks or content management systems that are out there. Each of them excel at their own special field of expertise and it's just that what makes them suitable for the job at hand (or not).

Zend.com WDE powered!

Last weekend the new Zend.com website was launched. I am very proud to say that it is WDE powered! WDE (Web Development Environment) is our content management system, based on our business framework ATK.

From our partnership with Zend we learned that Zend was searching for a new CMS. Soon after a demo of WDE a couple of the Zend.com team members came over and we had a nice week of training, discussion and thinking. After this week Ibuildings advised Zend on the implementation of new functionality in WDE.

PFZ project: collaborative learning

Introduction
As a former active member of the community website phpfreakz.nl I still tend to pay this site a visit every once in a while. Phpfreakz.nl is a Dutch forumsite which concentrates on webdevelopment and, obviously, PHP in particular. The majority of phpfreakz's user base exists of novices and hobbyists, supported and pushed into the right directions by helpful advanced members or even professionals. Activities around phpfreakz.nl are growing lately and this year the board even organized their first congress on which Ibuildings held a presentation as well.

Ibuildings CMS wordt open source: samen voor een beter product

Ibuildings werkt veel met producten die worden verspreid met een open source licentie. Ook door ons zelf ontwikkelde producten worden veelal gedistribueerd met een open source licentie. Ibuildings gelooft in de kracht van open source: het vrijgeven van de broncode waardoor iedereen gewenste aanpassingen aan het product kan doen, zodat het product door samenwerking steeds beter en completer wordt.

Joomla 1.5

Joomla 1.5 BetaOngeveer een jaar na de release van Joomla 1.0 heeft Joomla! versie 1.5 b�ta uitgegeven. Deze versie is van de grond af aan opnieuw opgebouwd. Het Content Management Systeem (CMS) maakt vanaf versie 1.5 gebruik van object geori�nteerd programmeren. Dit zorgt onder ander voor een flinke snelheidsverbetering. Websites die gemaakt worden met Joomla 1.5 voldoen aan de W3C normen. Het W3C is een organisatie, die het doel heeft om standaarden te cre�ren en zo de kwaliteit, stabiliteit en toegankelijkheid van het Internet te waarborgen.

Framework API
Joomla 1.5 heeft een grote code-herziening ondergaan en voorziet in een nieuwe API, die ontwikkelaars de mogelijkheid geeft om meer robuuste en innovatieve applicaties te ontwikkelen dan vooraf mogelijk was. Dankzij de API kun je veel configuratieopties aanpassen, kiezen op welke manier je wilt ontwikkelen en zelf eenvoudig uitbreidingen maken voor het CMS.
