A little over a week ago I visited the Business Day of the
Dutch Joomla Days 2008 in Utrecht with a
colleague. This year's theme was "Building Bridges".
The day started with an introduction by Henk van Cann about professional Open Source.
His presentation was followed by a keynote of Mitch Pirtle. Mitch is a
Joomla co-founder and former
OSM board member. He discussed his experiences with designing and developing high-traffic websites with Joomla for media companies in Times Square.
The next speaker was Clint Oram. Clint is one of three co-founders of
SugarCRM. In his presentation he talked about the possibility to build bridges between Joomla and SugarCRM. The last keynote was held by James Vasile. James, a jurist, talked about philosophy behind the General Public License. Vasiles talk was followed by a great lunch.
After the lunch there were three parallel sessions. The first talk we attended was a presentation about
Drupal by Bert Boerland. He tried to make clear why Drupal is so much better then Joomla: better user management, roles, hooks, CCK, views, workflow, multi-site install and taxonomy.
The second track we visited was held by Micha Kersloot. He gave an introduction to Joomla 1.5: He discussed the basic functions of the CMS and the differences with Joomla 1.0.x
The last parallel presentation, held by Jitse Reitsema was titled "Open Source Security". Jitse discussed the question if Open Source is safer then Closed Source and the question which conditions guarantee the safety of an Open Source Project.
After this track Henk van Cann thanked the speakers and audience for their presence.
It was the end of an interesting day. Joomla 1.5 has certainly made a number of significant improvements. Joomla 1.0 worked good, and now Joomla 1.5 has made what was good even better.
